In 2010, Caleb Sims made the mistake of pursuing a graphic design career. He’s worked under the intense deadlines as a local newspaper compositor, balanced numerous roles at a print shop, experimented with being self-employed, and navigated the demanding world of freelance work. And all along the journey, he has collected a plethora of books on type, color, and composition.
Sims’ journey at the Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell, Montana, began as a lowly compositor, where he was required to translate the sales reps’ rough layouts on scrap paper. The sales reps gained trust in his abilities and took his design and branding ideas to their clients. Eager to find additional challenges, he took on the page layout for the Lake County Leader’s sports section. The editor would win an award that year for the sports page layout.
Sims, after spending a year at the paper, would transition to Insty Prints of Kalispell, a local print shop. Where he worked hand-in-hand with the clients. This ability helped him gain both customer service experience and stretch the creativity of his designing to new levels. Some of his clients included a large mortgage company, various small businesses in multiple industries, and minor projects for funeral memorials, birthdays, and graduations. This four-year period encompassed a wide range of tasks, including design, pricing, printing, and bindery work.
Since leaving the print shop, Sims has been tackling a variety of projects. An ongoing project is the concert posters and program layout for Wai Mizutani at Impact WSCE. Other projects have been in the industries of real estate, medical, and tourism.
With a hunger for knowledge and a thirst for improvement, Sims craves and strives to master the craft of graphic design. Sims has been in an in-depth study of typography. His current study includes “A Grammar of Typography” by Mark Argetsinger and his current passion project is laying out a fun print version of “Alice in Wonderland”.
